"The observation that merely putting off death is not necessarily a desirable end in and of itself"

Why shouldn't we say instead that avoiding death is a desirable end in and of itself, but scarcity forces us to trade it off against other inherently desirable ends?

"As a society we’ve already reached the conclusion that it’s better to maintain a relatively small population that can live well than to expand into a great multitude that can barely make do."

How deliberatively? I see it as far from obvious that significant effort has gone into reflectively reaching that implicit consensus. Anyway, if it is true that we don't want many lives then its almost certainly true that we want either optimal lives or optimal moments. If the former we quite badly want life extension technology, if the latter better forms of chemical hedonism including costly chemical hedonism. I guess some sort of optimal unexperienced gestalt is remotely possible. That might recommend something like deep ecology or a caste system. Still, there's pretty clearly no room for anything much like our current social priorities to emerge out of reflective ethical thought.
